As Ryan Dungey, Trey Canard and Jessica Patterson stood atop the rest as the national champions in the respective 450, 250 and Women's Motocross classes, the AMA Pro Motocross Championship also welcomed five new faces to the all-time winners' list in the professional men's classes: Ryan Dungey (450), Eli Tomac (250), Tyla Rattray (250), Dean Wilson (250) and Trey Canard (250). Additionally, Dungey completed the most successful rookie season in premier-class history en route to becoming the first rider in AMA history to win both 450 championships (supercross and motocross) in his first year, while Canard had one of the most impressive comebacks in the history of the sport, overcoming a 50-plus-point deficit in the second half of the season to win his first motocross title.

MX Sports Pro Racing would like to congratulate its 2010 champions and provide a final statistical breakdown of the season that was.

2010 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship
Final Statistics

450 Class debutant Ryan Dungey is the first rider in AMA history to win both the AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross premier-class titles as a rookie. Since capturing his first career title in the 2009 AMA Supercross Lites West Region, Ryan Dungey has won four consecutive championships. Dungey is the youngest rider in history to win all four AMA championships and the first to do so consecutively. After a poor start to the season in which he finished eighth overall, Ryan Dungey went on to win 19 of the next 22 motos and 10 of the 11 remaining rounds. His average finish jumped from 8.0 to 3.3. He was the only rider in the class to win more than one moto. Andrew Short led all riders with 11 holeshots, capturing at least one in eight of the 12 rounds. Eight different riders claimed holeshots in both classes in 2010. Dungey led 48% of the laps completed in 2010 in the 450 Class. Brett Metcalfe and Nick Wey are the only two 450 Class riders to score points in all 24 motos. With his win at Steel City, Kevin Windham became the oldest winner in AMA history. 250 Class action was exceptional throughout the 2010 season and featured heavy parity with five different winners.
Courtesy Simon Cudby/Racer XWith five different winners throughout the 12 rounds of the championship, the 250 Class experienced the most parity since the 2005 season that featured six different winners. Of the five different winners in the 250 Class, four experienced victory for the first time in their careers. Trey Canard overcame a 55-point deficit over the second half of the season to win the 250 Class title. Through the first half of the season, Christophe Pourcel won seven of the 12 250 Class motos with at least one win at each of the first six rounds. In the second half he won just two motos over the final 12. His average finish fell from 2.5 to 6.9 over that span. Tyla Rattray holds the unique statistic of two overall victories in 2010 despite leading just one lap in the 250 Class. Both of his overall wins came via a pair of runner-up finishes. Dean Wilson claimed Rookie of the Year honors with two overall wins and a fourth place championship result in the 250 Class. Eli Tomac became the first rider in history to win his professional debut. GEICO Powersports Honda and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki won every 250 Class moto in 2010 and split overall wins with six apiece. Jessica Patterson became just the second factory-backed rider to win a WMX title. Ashley Fiolek captured an astonishing 13 of 16 holeshots but still came up short in her bid for a third consecutive title, despite an average finish of 1.9. Patterson and Fiolek were the only riders to lead a lap in the WMX class in 2010. Alexah Pearson captured Rookie of the Year honors and a Loretta Lynn's Amateur National Championship title.

The depth in the WMX Class also increased thanks to more support from established 450 and 250 class teams for the nation's fastest women.

Monster Energy AMA Supercross

Monster Energy AMA Supercross with plans underway for the inaugural, an FIM World Championship, race at Dodger Stadium on January 22, Feld Motor Sports presented the media with a preview of the conversion plans from a baseball field to a supercross facility.

Feld Motor Sports Senior Director of Operations Todd Jendro and Director of Supercross Dave Prater provided details of the historic undertaking of converting one of the most legendary stadiums in the country into a venue to host the world’s best supercross riders.
Monster Energy AMA Supercross
“Today marks a historic day not only for Monster Energy Supercross, but Dodger Stadium as well,” said Jendro. “This venue has a historic past and will now welcome 150 of the best riders on the planet. We feel that given the iconic image of Dodger Baseball and Dodger Stadium that it is the perfect fit to host an event of this caliber.”

Never before in the 48-year history of Dodger Stadium has an event of such a unique nature and logistic complexity been held at Chavez Ravine. Known for being the home of one of the most prominent Major League Baseball franchises of all time, 550 truckloads of dirt will sit on the Dodger Stadium floor for the first time ever, signifying a new era for the venue.

“We did the initial site visit a year ago,” added Prater. “When surveying a potential facility, we check out everything to see if it will work logistically ranging from the press box to the paddock. Dodger Stadium has one of the most valuable fields in the country and we are honored to be welcomed with open arms.”

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, who won seven AMA Supercross class races last season, was on hand to discuss his approach to racing in a new venue for the first time. Villopoto is coming off a season-ending injury suffered at the St. Louis round and will return to action for the first time during the 2011 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season.

“It’s always a different track no matter the stadium,” Villopoto said. “It really comes down to the dirt as some is really soft while others are really hard. If it is anything like the dirt we have at other rounds in California, it should be good. I’m really looking forward to the season coming up and I feel like I’m going to be more ready than I’ve ever been before.”

As a sign of their gratitude for allowing Monster Energy AMA Supercross to compete at Dodger Stadium, Feld Motor Sports presented Michael Young, Chief Revenue Officer of the Dodgers and known supercross fan, with a special customized Thor jersey.

“I’m very excited for this,” said Young. “I’m excited to expose this venue to millions of supercross fans across the world that have never had the opportunity to come to Dodger Stadium and hopefully convert them into baseball fans. This is an amazing sport and the growth of supercross is staggering, particularly in a time when many sports are shrinking.”

Additionally, Feld Motor Sports introduced Eric Hansen, Assistant Director of Turf and Grounds at Dodger Stadium, to the media. Hansen explained the complexity of laying dirt down on the field and what it means for what many consider to be the top playing surface in the country.

“I have all the confidence in the world in the Feld Motor Sports crew,” said Hansen. “All we have to worry about is replacing the actual grass once the dirt is removed and from what I’ve been told, (Feld) is the best in the world at what they do so my anxiety level is extremely low.”

Redemption Racing's Josh Snider in action at Sand Del Lee

New head cheese, Kyle Carruthers is busy working on some new and exciting stuff for DMX so he asked me to jump in this week and post the update for him. He'll jump back in later to add a few things before we make this sucker live.

The update this week is brought to you by Kamloops, British Columbia based RTR Performance. I've known Craig Fortune a long time and he's no doubt hard at work preparing his arenacross team for the first round of the Nex-Trax Canadian Arenacross series which is kicking off in two weeks time right near where I live in Chilliwack, BC. Craig's brought up some solid riders in the past, with the likes of Eric Nye and Sean Borkenhagen racing for him last year. His new employee, Newf, even won an AX title for the RTR team a couple years back.

As always here with the Frideh Update, we highlight the rider who's number corresponds with whichever edition of the Update that we're on and this week we're at number 43, which just happens to belong to none other than Redemption Racing's Josh Snider! One of the good guys of the sport, Josh, with his parents Lisa and Dave, have been racing the whole series for the past few years and running his own team, first as Team Faith and this year with Redemption Racing. Not only has Josh been racing, he's been a solid manager, fielding some strong riders such as Kevin Johnson and Mason Phillips. Mason even put the Redemption Racing team on the podium this year! And if Josh didn't have enough on his plate, he holds a morning devotional on race days too. So a big thanks goes out to Josh and the Snider's, the sport needs more people like you, for sure.

I caught up with Josh earlier in the year for a Privateer Profile, which you can read here: http://www.directmotocross.com/news/features/2010/06/privateer-profile-josh-snider

For me, personally, it was a fairly slow week in the world of motocross news. Pat O'Connor came over a couple days ago and we talked a bit about the Leading Edge team for 2011. Aside from the recently signed Kyle Beaton and the returning Teddy Maier, it looks like things are close to bring back Shawn Rife and they're possibly in talks for one more rider. It looks like things are shaping up well for the green boys for 2011. Also, they're hard at work on development of the new fuel injected 250 and it sounds like this is going to be one amazing motorcycle!

With nothing new going on this week, I dug back through my archives for the last month to put together this week's edition of the Troy Lee Designs Thursday Wallpapers. So much cool stuff happened in the past month that I had more than enough cool shots just waiting to be used for something. If you haven't checked them out already you can see them here: http://www.directmotocross.com/news/features/2010/10/tld-thursday-wallpapers-few-past-month

Anyways, that's about all I've got for this week. I'm going to hand this off to our esteemed new leader, Kyle Carruthers, who had a much more interesting week:

Thanks James! What a crazy few weeks it has been for me! It seems like for everyone in the industry this is one of the busiest times of the year. Off season? What’s that? Whether it is silly season and team mangers are trying to pick riders or vice versa, companies doing their budgets for next year or even racers still out riding try to get those last few rides in for the year, everyone seems to be busy! I know the Schuster's are busy getting Gopher Dunes ready for the first ever Sandstorm event. If you’re from Ontario the dunes will be the place where all the fun is happening on Sunday. Check out the interview Palms did with Digger right here if you haven’t already.

I’d like to apologize for not submitting a contribution last week. I was tied up at the Toronto International Snowmobile ATV and Powersports show. It was a great show put on by great people and a lot of people worked to make it happen. I was lucky to be a part of it and meet many new people in the process. There were lots of moto people hanging out too. Whether it was Andy white from KTM, OTSFF's Andre Laurin and his new Polaris supported snowcross team with rider Ian Hayden, The Scott guys, Hindle, Mark Perrin or the Parts Canada and Royal distributing crew there were lots of people there to talk about moto! It’s always nice to see familiar faces and at these trade shows sometimes there’s just not much else to do other than bench race. In fact I even saw Richard Grey there who will no doubt be lining up at the dunes this weekend and rumour has it he’ll be on a 450!

One of the coolest things was likely seeing the Sledneck boys flipping their sleds. Joe Parson, Heath Frisbee and Jeff Mullen really gave the crowd a great show. Make sure you put this event on your calendar for next year!

The Nex-Trax arena cross series is kicking off in just a couple weeks. There is no doubt in my mind it’s going to be a good series too. With the all new RTR performance team taking on the Monster Energy Leading Edge Kawasaki boys, Canadian MX Champ Dusty Klatt, as well as all the other pros who line up its going to make for some good racing. DMX and MX Forum will hopefully be teaming up to bring you guys a live webcast each and every weekend! Stuff is still in the works for it and if you’re interested in being a sponsor shoot me an email at kyle@directmotocross.com!

Also check out the video Blair Bouchard from MX Affilate made of the Dirt Shoot bike test day right here.

That’s all for me this week folks!

Matthes has been playing Bob Vila this week but he found time to send in some stuff for this week's update:

Thanks James! Well, I’m here in Las Vegas and I don’t have too much to say about this week, there wasn’t that much news and I’ve been out of the loop with my entire downstairs getting tiled. So me and my family (a wife and four dogs) have been stuck upstairs while the guys get busy. To try and save some money, I did the tear-out myself as well as have been helping with whatever I can. Quite frankly, I wish I had “Danny Brault-money” and could just go away for five days and when I came back-voila! Floor done. But as it is, I’m trying to keep the costs down and see if I can keep this job less than 5K.

Buddy's not sure what to think of this new floor.

Anyways, enough about me and my life, we do have some racing this weekend going on in the form of the Belfast SX which features Canada’s own Kyle Beaton and Colton Facciotti. I hope the boys do well over there in the land of potatoes and U2 and please Colton, just stay safe.

Down here in the US of A, silly season is still going on and word trickled down that Jake Weimer has been officially signed to the Monster Energy Kawasaki team and that pretty much leaves the list of big time riders that have yet to be signed to two: Chad Reed and Christophe Pourcel. Reed, I think, is close to a deal with a Yamaha team or maybe a Honda team…I’ve heard both to be honest. He loves the Honda and he loves the Pro Circuit mods on the Honda so that would make me think that TLD Honda could be a spot for him. But then again, Valli Yamaha has Rockstar Energy Drink money and it’s not like Reed and Yamaha left on bad terms so maybe that’s what is going to go down. All I know is that I have no idea.

As far as Pourcel, well he’s still asking for some serious money from teams and he’s currently in France rehabbing his shoulder. I still see him as a third rider at Kawasaki but only if the two parties can come together on a salary for next year. Other than that, I’m not sure what is going to happen down here. Things are still up in the air, money’s tight and people are riding this downturn out until it gets better.

Where will Pourcel land for 2011?

Hey if you’re reading this and it’s before 3PM PST, come on over to Pulpmx.com for a live chat with me. We can talk about all sorts of stuff.

We have a pair of autographed Kyle Keast X-Brand goggles from the recent MXDN to give away to the biggest Kyle Keast fan out there. These were actually work by Kyle at the race and were signed right afterwards.

The first person to email steve@directmotocross.comwith the right answers wins the goggles.

The question is: Name the last four national numbers that Kyle has earned.

That’s it! Get hunting and send in the answers!

Sorry for the briefness but that’s all I got, ok…back to the tile!

OK, here's Palms with this week's contribution:

Well, I hate to use something as small as the tree in our front yard as a barometer for when winter arrives, but the last leaf just blew off it a few minutes ago so winter must be right around the corner. One place that won’t see winter for a few months is Gopher Dunes. Even though it's only a 2 hour drive from my house, things are always brighter and greener in the land of sand and tobacco.

This Sunday at Gopher Dunes is the last race of the Ontario MX Season, usually everyone is just going through the motions and waiting until next year to get excited. Well, Derek Schuster and Brett Lee have teamed up to make sure the 2010 season ends with a bang. The race on Sunday will feature numerous race day changes, such as a few new classes, the chance to ride four classes for $60 and the chance for new riders to sign up and race with no CMRC license. There will also be a best whip contest and the presence of Red Bull who will be there giving out a plethora of prizes. It should be a great day and hopefully everybody leaves happy. Even if the day doesn’t quite go as planned, hats off to these guys for trying something new and for trying to drum up some excitement for what normally would have a nothing race. This is exactly what Canadian MX needs, some out of the box thinking.

If you're in SWO make sure to come out to Gopher Dunes this weekend for Sandstorm!photo courtesy of Gopher DunesMoving from dirt bikes to snowmobiles now, last weekend I attended the Toronto International Snowmobile Show at the International Centre. It was my first time ever going so I had no idea what to expect. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised with the set up and the turn out, it was packed on Saturday. Since winter is close I guess it is a great time of year to have a snowmobile show, a lot of people were there not just to look but to buy stuff for the upcoming season. Since the two sports cross over so much there were a lot of moto people at the show as well. Andy White was there for most of the day, KTM and Royal Distributing actually gave away a KTM to a lucky guy, Team OTSFF had the Polaris Team set up, Richard Grey was there and all recovered from his Montreal SX crash. Parts Canada had a huge display there, Scott Goggles were there, Hindle Exhausts, the list goes on and on as it was a great day. I even got to witness a sled doing a back flip in the parking lot, I wouldn’t have believed that if I didn’t see it.

The Belfast SX is also going on this weekend and it will mark Kyle Beaton’s first race on a green bike. Colton Facciotti will also be there, Tyler Medaglia was supposed to go but he is at home in Nova Scotia. It will be interesting to see how Beaton adapts to the Kawasaki, after all, he has been riding Yamahas since practically birth. Hopefully Facciotti also has a good race and starts to return to form. There were some talk that Colton would ride for Star Racing in the US in 2011, but they released their lineup this week and Colton was not on the list. There is a good article by Brett Lee over on MXP’s website where he speaks about Colton and what he might be thinking. It’s a pretty good read.

So, I hope if you live in Ontario and you're free on Sunday, you will find your way to Gopher Dunes and check out Sandstorm, it should be a great event. Also, if you have a few minutes after reading this, log on to MXForum and check out the really cool Blair Morgan video. Obviously Blair has been busy pimping out his Yamaha Rhino and it’s cool to see him putting laps on his old MX track. Some guys just look at home with a helmet and goggles on; Blair is certainly one of those guys. I hope everyone has a fun and safe weekend.

Brett Lee sent some random info over this week as well:

Did you know that the Fox Fall Hi Point Series run in SWO is the longest consecutive running series in Canada? Aurora Cycle -now Fox Canada- started sponsoring the series in 1992.

Machine Racing, Two Wheel Motorsports - Pro Action, SSS Suspension, MXP, DMX and Justin Rooney of Xtreme Toys are supporting new rider sponsors for this weekend at Gopher Dunes. These companies stepped up to sponsor new riders to motocross and to CMRC. Please take the time to thank these companies and give them your support.

Brett's dad, Chris Lee, the man behind the annual Walton Trans Can event is running for Deputy Mayor of Huron East and has created a Facebook page where you can support Chris in his plans for World domination(or at least Huron East domination):

Another fantastic racing weekend at the 24 Hours of Glen Helen

With the JCR Honda team winning their second consecutive race,IMS Products enjoyed another fantastic racing weekend at the 24 Hours of Glen Helen.Northland Precision Concepts Kawasaki’s team took second place while the John Burr Kawasaki team secured third, making it an all-IMS podium.

The 24 Hours of Glen Helen is one of the toughest off-road endurance races in the United States, and this year’s race was no exception. The sprawling, 12.2-mile long track took riders through the famed Glen Helen motocross track, through the surrounding hills, around the truck racing stadium, and even made use of the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Training facility. With lap times around 30 minutes, the race demanded the most out of both the riders and their machines.

IMS oversized fuel tanks and Quick Fill system proved to play a pivotal role in the races by limiting the number of fuel pit stops teams needed to make and making those fuel stops as quick as possible.

The battle of the decade between Ben Townley and Antonio Cairoli

The 2011 battle for the FIM World MX1 Championship between Ben Townley and Antonio Cairoli might just be the battle of the decade. The last ten years have seen many amazing battles in the MX1 class. Back in the early 2000’s legendary riders Stefan Everts, Joel Smets and Mickael Pichon were major rivals. Everts just winning the 500cc title in 2001 from Smets by 21 points after Smets scored 1-1-1 in the final three rounds, while Everts went DNF-2-2. Everts had held a 56 point lead until his DNF in Lierop.

A year later Everts again beat Smets this time by 39pts in the 500cc class.

Of course back in 2003 three legends Everts, Pichon and Smets al fought for the MotocrossGP title. Amazingly Pichon started the year with 1-1-1 results and looked like he was heading for World title number three, that was until Everts decided to also race the MX2 class and started putting together win after win after win. Such a form reversal as Everts won the last nine rounds of the MotocrossGP class and eight of the last nine rounds of the MX2 class. In the end the Championship was decided when Joel Smets could only finish with 25 points from the final two rounds to 50pts by Everts. Everts winning the title by 40pts.

With Smets and Pichon retiring Everts rode roughshod over his rivals, winning the 2004, 2005 and 2006 titles with ease, winning in 04 by 66pts, 05 by 69pts and his final year in the sport in 2006 by a massive 210 points.

Since Everts retirement it’s been Steve Ramon who won in the year Josh Coppins should have. Ramon winning by 33pts. David Philippaerts won in 2008 and rode amazingly, although only winning the Championship by 14 points from Steve Ramon and Ken De Dycker a further five points back.

Last season Antonio Cairoli picked up his third World Motocross Championship by winning the MX1 class from Max Nagl, the gap being just 36pts. This year the little Italian won from Clement Desalle with the point’s gap being 88pts.

The question now is, can Townley reproduce the form that took him to his 2004 World MX2 Championship and that magic season when he battled Ryan Villopoto in the AMA 250cc Championship, or will he continue to make mistakes as he has done this year. There is no doubt the New Zealander wants that MX1 Championship, it was one of his goals when he left for America five years ago to return and win once again in Europe. With a winter of thought and time to once again put his body and soul into the right place he will be hard to beat. His speed is without question right up there with the likes of Ryan Dungey, Ryan Villopoto and Cairoli.

As for Cairoli, just like Stefan Everts before him has moved to the top of the pack in the FIM World Motocross Championship. He is our pin-up boy, the one we all look to when the MXoN comes around he is the one we expect to battle with the American riders.

Cairoli has proven the last five years that he belongs in the record books with the likes of De Coster, Geboers, Hallman, Robert, Malherbe, Rahier, (Harry) Evert, Jobe, Thorpe, (Stefan) Everts and Smets, and he is the one that we expect to never give up and always have a back-up plan if things don’t go his way.

What will happen when Townley puts pressure on the Italian, how will he respond, can he come back if Townley starts the season on fire. The same can be said for Townley. How will he react if Cairoli is clearly smarter and faster. The European circuits have changed a lot since BT was here in 2005 and while there is no doubt he can adapt as he had to in America, but how quickly can he do that.

Just the thought of Cairoli and Townley going head to head for a Championship is mouth watering and I for one wouldn’t dare predict the winner.

Kawasaki returns to the International Dirt Bike

Kawasaki is returning to the International Dirt Bike Show with a comprehensive Team Green display and 2011 model line-up. The forward-thinking Japanese manufacturer has admitted the importance of the Dirt Bike Show to KMUK, its riders, owners and many fans. Recognising that the show is 100 per cent dedicated to off-road in its many guises, Kawasaki has decided to take its liveried team truck to Stoneleigh and has some exciting plans in place to launch not one, but two teams for 2011.

Working from a race-paddock environment, the Lanes Kawasaki squad, together with British sensation Scott Elderfield, will make their debut. Having clinched both Masters MX1 and MX2 Pro titles, Scott is sure to be in demand and he'll be on hand throughout the show to sign posters and chat with fans. The unveiling of the new Twisted7 Kawasaki team is another first for the show. Running riders in all the youth classes of BYMX, MXY2 and the Red Bull Elite, the initiative is the brainchild of MX guru Jeff Perrett, and he will be available on the stand to talk to prospective riders and product supporters.

The Kawasaki experience does not stop there, far from it. Official KMUK MX Team, Maxxis Henderson LPE Kawasaki will be in attendance, lining up alongside a display of championship-winning machinery. On show will be the winning KX250F's of Connor Walkley and Lee Dunham, together with the stunning machines ridden by Kristian Whatley and Gert Krestinov. Visitors can also expect to find those respective riders on, or around the Kawasaki stand during the show.

Speaking about Kawasaki's return to the UK's premier off road showcase, Racing Coordinator for KMUK, Ross Burridge stressed the importance of the show to Kawasaki.

"This event is 100 per cent dedicated to off-road machinery and off-road sport. That gives Kawasaki a massive opportunity to connect with a core audience, to show them next year's bikes and provide a welcome chance to meet the riders and the teams."

Whilst Kawasaki is currently enjoying sole-billing in terms of Japanese official participation at the International Dirt Bike Show, the manufacturer will be in good company. KTM will be celebrating its World MX1 and MX2 domination with an impressive show line-up of multi-championship factory race steeds and 2011 stock bikes; Husaberg will display its all-new two-strokes; the TE250 and 300; Husqvarna will launch an all-new enduro and motocross version of its radically-designed 449 series; Rieju will be showcasing its 2011 enduro and supermoto range of machines, made in Spain and powered by Yamaha; and CCM will have the C-XR230 and Puzey XTR4 range lining up alongside its 2010 race bikes.

Will the rest of the Japanese join them?

Derek Schuster about Ontario Motocross Season

The season race at Gopher Dunes this weekend could have been just another end .But, Derek Schuster and Brett Lee have decided to make things a little more interesting and try and make it a day riders soon won’t forget. Nicknamed “Sandstorm”, the final race of the Ontario Motocross Season this Sunday will feature some new classes, fun events such as a best whip contest, and the option to sign up and race even if you don’t have a valid CMRC License. To get the fine details and the reason behind this cool event, I gave Derek a call; here is what he had to say.

DMX: Hey Derek, what are you doing today?

Derek: Well, right now I am cooking up a little bit of lunch. After lunch, I have a some work to do on the track to get ready for this weekend, the track is open for practice until Wednesday night so people will be showing up soon to ride also.

DMX: Tell me about Sandstorm, what is going to be different than normal this weekend?

There are a few things that are going to be different. We are trying a new format with what goes on during the day at the track. There will be some new classes, some different side events going on and to race on Sunday, you will not need a CMRC license. The aim is to obviously get as many riders out as possible, but we also want to make it fun for everyone who comes through the gate, and we want the day to end as early as possible so people can leave at a decent time.

Derek Schuster still finds some spare time when he can to rip some laps around his masterpiece!

DMX: How did all these new ideas come to fruition?

We have spent a lot of time talking to a lot of different people about right way to do this, we have spoken to you, industry people like Andy White, Ryan Gauld gave us a lot of feedback with how the classes might work, and just a lot of different ideas thrown into a hat and here we are. I think it’s going to be great!

DMX: You mentioned that a rider will not need a CMRC license for this event, how does that work?

It is still a CMRC sanctioned event but to try and attract more riders, we have worked things out with the CMRC that you will not need to pay for a license on Sunday. You will still need to fill the application out, but you won’t have to pay. Insurance is obviously an issue for those riders who are here for the first time, but we have put together some generous sponsors to cover their insurance. We just want to try an attract more first time racers, that’s what it’s all about.

DMX:That sounds really good Derek, it good that the CMRC is bending the rules a little bit to help you create some more excitement in Ontario Motocross!

Oh yes, for sure. Mark and everybody have been very receptive to the idea right from the start. If a first time rider shows up here on Sunday who normally wouldn’t have because they can’t afford to spend the money right now, if that rider has fun and goes racing in 2011, everybody, including the CMRC wins. It’s good for the sport.

Gopher Dunes never lets racers down when it comes to track prep!

DMX: How will the new classes work?

Our goal with the new class format was to eliminate a few of them so riders can get more track time but also so everyone can come and have a good day racing and be able to leave at a decent time. No one, including us want to be here until dark racing. So we have gotten rid of all the MX3 classes, there will now be only a class for 250 four strokes and an open class for all other big bikes. If a junior rider for instance wants to ride three classes, then they can ride the 250F class, the open class and then an age class, unless they are 25 or over because there will also be no plus 25 class on Sunday. We have also added an extra year onto the schoolboy class so it is now 12-16, we will also be letting a kid ride a 250F in the schoolboy class if they are 16 or under. All these changes may not help every rider in the pits, but we feel the majority of guys will benefit on Sunday. By trying all these changes now, it gives us the opportunity to see how it all works and evaluate it over the winter.

DMX: Wow! That is a lot of changes, are you sure that’s it?

I know that is a lot but we really want to try these things to see how they work. Actually, there is a few more things. Riders in the 50cc class will ride for free on Sunday and there will also be a open class for 50’s and 65’s to give the kids who want it, an extra class to ride. Like I said before, one of our goals is to give everyone more track time.

DMX: Sounds like there will be a lot of action on the track, what about the action off the track. What kind of side events do you have planned?

We have a freestyle ramp already to go for the best whip contest; the riders have already pre entered so that is ready to go. Red Bull has stepped up huge as a sponsor and will be there on Sunday in full force with their Energy Lounge, everyone knows how cool that is. There will also be a Show and Shine in the morning on Sunday, so the rider with the best looking bike will win some cool Red Bull prizes!

You never have to worry about dust at Gophers thanks to the fantastic watering system they run. One thing forsure is that the Schusters and Staff don't cut corners when it comes to good safe racing!

DMX: So when a rider shows up on Sunday, what will they have to pay?

There will be a gate fee as usual, that hasn’t changed. A rider can ride one class for $30 or as a special offer, they can ride four classes for $60. With these changes, I think there is going to be some tired riders on Sunday night! Hopefully they go to sleep with a smile on their face though!

DMX: Ok Derek, thanks for taking the time to chat. I hope Sunday is a huge event and a taste of what is to come in 2011!

We hope so too. We know it’s expensive to go racing, our goal is to build the best track we can and put on the best event we can. I hope everyone comes on Sunday and checks things out!

French Beach Race won by Suzuki

Having probably been resigned to the history books,Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2's Arnaud Tonus has yet to finish his racing commitments this year and last weekend gained arguably one of his most impressive results since turning ‘yellow’ almost 12 months ago.

The teenage Swiss, who finished seventh in the FIM MX2 class in just his second season at the highest level, guided his potent RM-Z250 to victory in the Berck sur Mer beach race on the west coast of France.

In taking 1st, 2nd and 1st positions in the three races in tough sandy conditions and through a deep course that involved a three minute lap, Tonus defeated a host of renowned MX1 (450cc) riders including 10-times World Champion Stefan Everts, Belgian Champion Steve Ramon, Grand Prix winner Ken De Dycker, French Champion Xavier Boog and other World Championship peers such as Anthony Boissiere and Harri Kullas.

It was an emphatic and confident performance from Tonus who ended the Grand Prix term with his first podium result at Fermo for the GP of Italy a month ago.

“I’m really happy with how things went because the track was really tough and there were a lot of good riders,” he said. “This shows that I have really progressed in the sand as this was one of my weak points in 2009. Overall it has been a good season for me and I have benefitted from being with the team and on such a competitive bike. Fermo was a memorable weekend and I have not stopped training because I want to race Supercross and keep busy.”

Tonus will continue to compete in the coming weeks but this time switching to the discipline of Supercross and entering European SX championship rounds in Milan and Genoa as well as the high-profile Bercy SX in Paris on November 19th, 20th and 21st.

Racing Denver EnduroCross

Kurt Nicoll will roll away from his desk job with Godfrey Entertainment (think: Nitro Circus) here in a couple weeks and swap a cell phone for a helmet and a laptop for a dirt bike when he lines up for round five of GEICO EnduroCross, presented by E3 Spark Plugs, at Denver’s National Western Complex.

Nicoll, who will be just a couple weeks shy of his 46th birthday on Oct. 30, will likely have the crowd behind him since he is well known as the former KTM racing manager, a top Motocross GP contender and AMA Supermoto championship winner. Nicoll will be looking to qualify for the Vet class main event versus a tough field of fellow vets from the Colorado area.

Knowing full well he’s got a difficult road despite his credentials, Nicoll recently tuned up for the Denver EnduroCross by winning the Pro class at the Nitro Circus Halloween Grand Prix in Utah, a combination motocross, supermoto, off-road, EnduroCross event near Nitro Circus’ headquarters in Salt Lake City. So he figures he’s sharp enough to run GEICO EnduroCross’ Vet class … sort of.

“We’ve had a bit of practice here in Utah lately; feel I’m better prepared than a few years ago. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to be any good,” Nicoll says laughing. “At least it means I feel better prepared.”

A combatant in a couple of the very first Orleans Arena GEICO EnduroCross events, “Back when they held just one a year,” according to Nicoll, he certainly expects things to be considerably different when he boots up for the Denver round (Oct. 30) at the National Western Complex.

2010 GEICO EnduroCross

“In the days of the first EnduroCross events here in the States we were all just basically winging it,” he said. “Just showing up because nobody really knew very much about the sport and the tracks changed a lot from year to year. There were no specialized EnduroCross racers at that point.”

So at 45 … and counting … does Nicoll feel he has enough in the tank to bust through his qualifiers and put up a solid number in the main? “I don’t know that,” said Nicoll, I feel like I’m physically prepared if I can do the job properly, but as soon as I start crashing it’s going to get a LOT more difficult. And I’m going to crash, there’s no doubt as everybody does.”

Sponsors backing Nicoll’s run for glory for the Denver and Vegas GEICO EnduroCross rounds include: Alpinestars, Dunlop, Scott, EVS, Nitro Circus KTM

EnduroCross tracks incorporate various elements of off road racing into a supercross-style setting, including rocks, boulders, logs, sand, mud, a water-hole … and even a few special obstacles like giant tires thrown in! Known as the “toughest racing on two wheels,” this indoor version of extreme off road racing will certainly keep you on your feet. With its excitement and unpredictability the EnduroCross championship has always gone down to the wire and this year will be no different as the series starts and finishes at Vegas’ Orleans Arena! Don’t miss your chance to see GEICO Powersports AMA Endurocross “Live.”

The 2010 FIM Motocross World Championship may well have been resigned to the history books

Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2's Arnaud Tonus has yet to finish his racing commitments this year and last weekend gained arguably one of his most impressive results since turning 'yellow' almost 12 months ago.

"I'm really happy with how things went because the track was really tough and there were a lot of good riders," he said. "This shows that I have really progressed in the sand as this was one of my weak points in 2009. Overall it has been a good season for me and I have benefitted from being with the team and on such a competitive bike. Fermo was a memorable weekend and I have not stopped training because I want to race Supercross and keep busy."

Tonus will continue to compete in the coming weeks but this time switching to the discipline of Supercross and entering European SX championship rounds in Milan and Genoa as well as the high-profile Bercy SX in Paris on November 19th, 20th and 21st.

AMA Racing Kenda National Hare & Hound Championship Series

Announced today by the The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) the 2011 schedule for the AMA Racing Kenda National Hare & Hound Championship Series, which determines the country's top desert racers every year in a number of skill- and machine-based classes.

Once again, the AMA is partnering with the National Hare & Hound Association (NHHA), which will promote the series. The NHHA is made up of four AMA District 37 clubs: Desert MC, Vikings MC, Four Aces MC and 100's MC.

"In 2010, we saw immediate benefits from working with the NHHA to promote and develop the AMA Racing Kenda National Hare & Hound Championship Series, said AMA Director of Racing Joe Bromley. "Now, with a year under our belts, we're looking forward to even more growth in 2011, and we think this schedule and our plan for next year reflect that."
AMA Pro Racing
The NHHA's Ryan Sanders says that the group is eager to get to work on the new season.

"From the riders who have followed the series across the country, to the sponsors who have stepped up to make each of the events happen, 2010 was everything we expected and more," Sanders said. "Series Manager Chris Blais has built a quality contingency program, and it shows each and every time we hand the riders their certificates. This series is clearly on its way to be the premier off-road racing series in the western United States."

Sanders said that in 2011 he expects contingency payments to continue to grow, along with other ways to reward amateur riders, including product giveaways and more attractions such as pro autograph sessions. The extra attention the clubs have been paying to amateur classes is paying off, Sanders added.

"The C rider program has been our best accomplishment thus far," he said. "The number of riders who have been traveling is amazing, and it's really a family thing. There are father-and-son combos, grandfather-and-grandson combos, father-and-daughter, and even husband-and-wife. The Hare & Hound Nationals have something for everyone, and it's exciting to be a part of everyone's lives for one to two weekends a month. We have really become a family, and I just can't wait to start the new year and do this whole thing all over again!"

The 2011 AMA Racing Kenda National Hare & Hound Championship Series will begin on Jan. 23 at the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Area near Lucerne, Calif. Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing in full force at the renowned Toronto International Snowmobile

In full force at the renowned Toronto International Snowmobile,ATV and Powersports Show (Oct. 15-17),the Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing with crew chief Adam Robinson and sled drivers Iain Hayden and Lee Butler manning the frontlines.

The show, the largest of its kind in the world, was the first major public showing of the 2011 Polaris Assault snowmobile, the same model the factory team will use to campaign the CSRA National Championship in Canada. In addition to the Canadian national points chase, the team will also contest the CSRA’s regional tour as well as selected ISOC World Championship rounds in the United States, to assure maximum exposure for Minnesota-based Polaris Industries.

The Toronto International Snowmobile, ATV and PowersportsShow recorded an impressive attendance figure of 26,775 sled enthusiasts. Numerous visitors flocked to the Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing display area, where Hayden and Butler signed autographs for snowcross racing fans. In total the team handed out 1,000 posters and thousands of stickers to promote the team and the upcoming snowcross racing season.

“We were thrilled with the response we received at our display. The show was a great place to introduce Iain and Lee to race fans for a meet-and-greet. We’re all excited about the upcoming season and putting Polaris in the winner’s circle,” said Adam Robinson. “Team spirit is definitely high. We’ve got a great bunch of technical guys and with Iain and Lee we have two of the best drivers on the circuit. The equipment we’ll be running will be second to none. We’ll be hitting snow-country real soon to start dialling things in so we’re on top of our game when the season starts.”

Hayden, who was runner-up in the CSRA Pro Open title chase last season, has won three National Championship titles. His teammate, Butler, is a two-time pro champ. Butler’s most recent title win was in the CSRA Pro Open division last season. Butler won a CSRA championship for Polaris a few years ago and together with Hayden is focused on bringing the manufacturer back to a point where they will be in contention for another Canadian title.

With the rapidly approaching racing season, which kicks off in mid-December, Team Rockstar Energy Polaris Racing will start testing and fine-tuning the Assault racing sleds in early November.

Marc De Reuver will be back

At 27 years old of age Marc De Reuver isn?t about to sell his mansion in Belgium and move into a retirement village. The multiple Grand Prix winner and one time King of the sand is on the way back and it?s a journey that hasn?t been easy. Mid-way through the 2010 season De Reuver was down and out, disappointed with life and depressed about his future. So deep was the depression that the Dutchman started taking anti-depressive tablets. The tablets might have helped for a short time, but in the long run they nearly ruined his career. I decided to sit down with a rider and person I really like and from the happy go lucky replies to my questions I get the feeling that the rider I always called the “Flying Dutchman” might be serious about making some waves in the MX1 class in 2011.

MXlarge: Marc, I talked to you in the middle of the season and I remember you feeling down. Can you tell me how you are feeling now?

De Reuver: Mentally I am back. I was taking those anti-depressive tablets because I was depressed and I took those things and at first they worked well, but then it was more dangerous than drugs, because it manipulates your mind. People were passing me on the track and I didn’t care, I just didn’t want to race because I was scared, very strange things happen to you.

MXlarge: What was the lowest point?

De Reuver: At Glen Helen, I don’t know what I was doing there, but it just didn’t matter anymore, but that was because of those pills.

MXlarge: When did you get off the pills?

De Reuver: I got off them on the Sunday night after Lommel. I was riding at Lommel and I was thinking what am I doing it, and then I stopped with those tablets and a week later I was second in the Keiheuvel behind Ramon, a week earlier he was lapping me in Lommel and in Keiheuvel I was battling with him. I felt it straight away that my mind was better.

MXlarge: With Ben Townley coming back, a rider you had a lot of battles with in the early part of your career, does that also motivate you?

De Reuver: You know I raced with Ben from 2000 until 2004, so why not. Everybody is talking about Ben and about Cairoli, about De Dycker, or Philippaerts. I want everyone to talk about me again, but not in a shit way like it’s been this year.

MXlarge: What were the worst things you heard said about you?

De Reuver: People have said I am past it. Many said Marc De Reuver is a closed book; he will never make it again. I only heard that from the people I don’t respect. I can imagine people thinking that, of course, but when you think it the second after you have to also think he has battled with the guys who are World Champions now.

MXlarge: You did make some very good results after you stopped with the anti-depressives didn’t you?

De Reuver: I finished the year on a high note. I mean from the time I stopped using the tablets I finished inside the top seven in every race apart from Fermo, but I was four months off the bike and top ten was possible there. I was happy with that. I won the European of Nations, people might not take that race serious, but Leok was also riding there and I beat him twice by half a minute. It felt good. I won a beach race two weekends ago in the South of Italy, beating Cairoli, I beat him twice. I passed him on the last corner.

MXlarge: What about 2011, what will you do?

De Reuver: I am going to ride for Van Beers Yamaha. We will do Dutch Championship, World Championship and any Belgian Championships that don’t clash with those other races.

MXlarge: Is it possible to win Grand Prix’s or place well on a privateer team?

De Reuver: You know Geoff; they don’t make bad bikes anymore. They don’t make a bad Japanese bike. That Suzuki I rode this year had more horsepower than the bike of Ramon, I know that for a fact, but they were faster, but you need how to use the power and they were a little faster. I don’t say the suspension is better, but engine wise my bike was better.

MXlarge: What is your goal for 2011?

De Reuver: I want to be Dutch Champion again and be back, I want to be back. I don’t need first place, but I want to be back.

MXlarge: When does your preparation start for next year?

De Reuver: I just had an operation on my pelvis, they took some bone out of my pelvis from 2009, and I still had to do that. My last race was Sunday and I can’t do anything for three weeks, then I start getting ready for next year. I go to Spain with me, myself and I.

MXlarge: You didn’t have a good 2010, that is clear, but does it surprise you that everyone says that De Reuver is finished when you are still the fastest MX1 rider in Holland. You did have some results also at the end of the season?

De Reuver: That is a strange thing. In MX1 I am far away the best rider in Holland, but it’s strange, if they don’t take riders outside Holland I lap everyone. It’s strange how people see that, I am still the National Champion in my own country.

“What kind of Yamaha are you”? Is the trademarked slogan that Yamaha has been using for quite some time now, not only is it different but it’s catchy and really lets you see all the different kind of products Yamaha has to offer through their fantastic marketing and ad campaigns. Where that slogan came from, I personally have no idea, but I know that it likely came from Yamaha’s desire and innovation process to become different. Whether it is the YZ400F, the first four stroke motocross bike Yamaha made, to their all new sleek and stylish YZ250F. Yamaha wanted to be different and introduced some backwards thinking into the market, literally, when they launched their 2010 YZ450F and carried it on to 2011.
