In the last weeks rumours that Rockstar Motul Suzuki rider,Matt Moss, is about to be stripped of his 2010 Super X Lites class title, with the No.1 plate handed to JDR Motorex KTM's PJ Larsen - the reigning MX Nats Lites champ, who finished 2 points behind Moss in the Super X points standings.
So what the hell is going on? Well, question marks have arisen over the fact that, after his Moto 1 crash at the Brisbane series finale on Saturday night, Moss only completed three of the five laps, or just 60% of the race distance. No one is arguing the fact that the gritty Moss clawed his way back to 17th place in that moto, or that 17th place is awarded with 4 points. What has been pointed out, however, is that the MA rulebook states a rider must complete 75% of the race distance to be eligible for championship points. That means Moss would lose those pivotal 4 points and he'd finish 2 points behind Larsen in the championship standings, not 2 points in front!
Complicating the issue are counter-claims that PJ Larsen himself failed to complete 75% of the race distance the previous week at Parramatta, when bike damage caused the KTM rider to pull off the track just a lap into the final moto of the night's Survival Format.
Super X promoter, Global Action Sports, was hesitant to comment on the situation when we called, but did say there would soon be an official announcement about the situation.
Super X Race Director Kevin Williams did, however, go on the record to say that, "Yes, we are reviewing the Overall result of the Super X Lites Championship, with respect to the points allocated at the final two rounds, and will make an announcement which may affect the final championship standings. That's all I can say at this stage."
One thing's for sure, when Matt Moss leaves Suzuki in the coming weeks to take up his ride with Team JDR Motorex KTM, he's likely to do so with very mixed emotions. This was to be his historic hat-trick of Lites class Super X titles.
And the great irony of the situation if the title is, in fact, handed to Larsen: JDR Motorsports KTM won't be able to run the No.1 plate for Super X next year. As things were, JDR would have inherited the No.1 plate, having signed Moss for 2011 a few months back. But with Larsen heading back to the States to ride with JDR Motorsports USA-based team next year, that No.1 might just be parked. All things considered, we reckon that might not be a bad result.
