Nicoll, who will be just a couple weeks shy of his 46th birthday on Oct. 30, will likely have the crowd behind him since he is well known as the former KTM racing manager, a top Motocross GP contender and AMA Supermoto championship winner. Nicoll will be looking to qualify for the Vet class main event versus a tough field of fellow vets from the Colorado area.
Knowing full well he’s got a difficult road despite his credentials, Nicoll recently tuned up for the Denver EnduroCross by winning the Pro class at the Nitro Circus Halloween Grand Prix in Utah, a combination motocross, supermoto, off-road, EnduroCross event near Nitro Circus’ headquarters in Salt Lake City. So he figures he’s sharp enough to run GEICO EnduroCross’ Vet class … sort of.
“We’ve had a bit of practice here in Utah lately; feel I’m better prepared than a few years ago. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to be any good,” Nicoll says laughing. “At least it means I feel better prepared.”
A combatant in a couple of the very first Orleans Arena GEICO EnduroCross events, “Back when they held just one a year,” according to Nicoll, he certainly expects things to be considerably different when he boots up for the Denver round (Oct. 30) at the National Western Complex.
“In the days of the first EnduroCross events here in the States we were all just basically winging it,” he said. “Just showing up because nobody really knew very much about the sport and the tracks changed a lot from year to year. There were no specialized EnduroCross racers at that point.”
So at 45 … and counting … does Nicoll feel he has enough in the tank to bust through his qualifiers and put up a solid number in the main? “I don’t know that,” said Nicoll, I feel like I’m physically prepared if I can do the job properly, but as soon as I start crashing it’s going to get a LOT more difficult. And I’m going to crash, there’s no doubt as everybody does.”
Sponsors backing Nicoll’s run for glory for the Denver and Vegas GEICO EnduroCross rounds include: Alpinestars, Dunlop, Scott, EVS, Nitro Circus KTM
EnduroCross tracks incorporate various elements of off road racing into a supercross-style setting, including rocks, boulders, logs, sand, mud, a water-hole … and even a few special obstacles like giant tires thrown in! Known as the “toughest racing on two wheels,” this indoor version of extreme off road racing will certainly keep you on your feet. With its excitement and unpredictability the EnduroCross championship has always gone down to the wire and this year will be no different as the series starts and finishes at Vegas’ Orleans Arena!
