For those who don't know, The Post Office, UPS, and Fed Ex are not gentle with your packages. Boxes get tossed, fall off trucks, and are dropped. I'm not saying that shipping employees do these kinds of things on purpose but, accidents do happen. This is why it is important to ensure that you protect the parts you send to us so they can arrive safely. In order to accomplish this goal, there are some simple packing steps to follow.
Step 1: Select a sturdy box for the part you are sending. The box should be of a type that isn't easily crushed and of a size that minimized the movement of the part(s) inside. Care should be taken to ensure that the part fits completely inside without sticking out.
Step 2: Place a good 2-3 inch layer of peanuts on the bottom inside the box for cushion. Depending on the size of the part you are shipping to us will determine the amount of packing peanuts to be used. It's very important that you don't skimp on this step. If you're not sure about how much packing peanuts to use, more is always better than not enough.
Step 3: Use bubble wrap! Even though you are using packing peanuts, you still need to bubble wrap the part you are sending us. This provides double the protection and reduces the risk of damage, chipped paint, or scratches.
Step 4: Now that you have your part completely bubble wrapped, place it in the box on top of the packing peanuts. You should have some gaps inside the box surrounding your bubble wrapped part.
Step 5: Fill all gaps and dead air space inside the box with more packing peanuts. This should fill up the box all the way. When finished, you should be able to close the box lids easily.
Step 6: Now, with your part secure and completely protected inside the box, seal the box with liberal amounts of packing tape.
Step 7: If you have followed all of the previous steps, you should be able to shake your sealed box without hearing any movement inside. Remember, if you hear movement, there is risk of damage. Now is the time to correct any packaging problems.
These steps work extremely well for smaller parts such as gas tanks, fenders, and oil tanks. For larger items such as motorcycle frames, you may want to consider shipping it to us in a crate instead of a cardboard box.
This is the only thing that would change due to its size and weight requirements.
Please keep in mind that you still need to follow all of the steps listed above whether you are shipping items in a wooden crate or a cardboard box. The ultimate goal is to prevent unnecessary damage to any of the parts you are shipping to us for custom paint.
