The 21 year old British rider Jack Brunell who is riding for the Golden Tyres IHLE Kawasaki team in the German Supercross series. Brunell showed his true colors last Saturday night in Stuttgart when he won the Saturday night program after a rough night on the Friday night. Brunell went 9-2-3-1 for the weekend, but missed out on winning the Prince of Stuttgart when he had a huge crash on the opening night. We caught up with the young Brit and asked him about his weekend.MXlarge: Jack, you back home?Brunell: Yes, we drove straight back after the final, so we got home about nine o’clock in the morning.
MXlarge: Can you explain your weekend for me?
Brunell: The weekend went pretty good, qualification went well I posted a fast time, I felt good the track was good, just a little soft. First final I had second gate pick and came out third, I missed a gear on the big triple and cased the bike and crashed. The bike was all bent and stuff, I just carried on around, because last year I lost a lot of points from pulling off, so I just kept going, managed to finish the race in ninth place. Some guys pulled out so that was pretty lucky for me really.
MXlarge: Obviously the second moto on Friday and the whole program on Saturday went better for you?
Brunell: The second race I came out in third again and caught Ashley and passed him, but Dennis had a big crash and I finished second and third on the night. I was pretty happy with third after that first moto. Obviously I won on Saturday and I was pretty happy with that, I wanted to win the Prince of Stuttgart again, so bit disappointed, but lucky to finish top three considering. I will do the whole series; the next one is in Chemnitz. Last year I was Prince of Stuttgart.
MXLarge: Did you do some of the British Supercross races?
Brunell: I did Belfast a couple of weeks ago, but the tracks in England are totally different than in Germany, they are not really Supercross tracks in England really, pretty easy, the racing is close. I would love to have some of the English guys come to Germany, because it’s more like real Supercross. It doesn’t make you look real good in the British races. I got second in the SX2 class to Adam Chatfield so that wasn’t too bad.
MXlarge: Why do you do the German series?
Brunell: The big crowds and the atmosphere are really good, plus the tracks are so much better. The people are really nice and happy to see you, it’s a good series.
MXlarge: Just give a rundown of which you are, many people won’t know you that well?
Brunell: I obviously started racing when I was young because my dad used to ride. When I was little I rode quads and then in the schoolboy’s series I did pretty well, I had some good results. In the 125cc I rode in Belgium for a while because of the foot and mouth in England. I stepped it up in Belgium and had some really good results, they guys out there are really nice. I was then asked by Factory TM to ride the European Supercross about four years ago and that is what got me into the Supercross really. I’ve done some European Supercross races since then and concentrated on Supercross because I am pretty good at that. Obviously I want to get over to US or maybe Australia because Supercross is really getting big there. I want to see how I go this year and maybe sort something out over there for next year.
MXlarge: Tell me about British Motocross scene, will you do the Red Bull Pro Nationals or the Maxxis British Championship?
Brunell: I am going to be doing them, I injured my wrist at the start of the year and I was out for four months, injured it again and I decided to concentrate on Supercross.
MXlarge: Any desire to do the Grand Prix’s?
Brunell: I would love to do a couple of Grand Prix’s, it cost a lot to do the Grand Prix’s and if I do it I want to do it properly. I ride for Ihle racing in Germany, cool guy and he gives me a good bike to race and a practice bike for back home.Next year I will race for Rabbit Racing in Holland and will do some rounds of the Red Bull Pro Nationals and also some of the Maxxis rounds.
