East Anglia and East Kent joined forces to put on the first round of their Combined Winter Series.Full line ups in most groups and high numbers in the rest ensured a good day’s racing was promised – and we weren’t disappointed.
First out were the Adult group and the racing was hard and fast. George Baldwin was in superb form and took the first win with relative ease; a dnf from Luke Benstead prevented him from making his mark. Luke chased George in the second moto but George kept his head and took the chequered flag again. The last race gave Luke the break he needed and he stormed to victory while George came in second to take the overall win. Good solid, but still very fast, riding from Matt White and Seb Osborne gave them 2nd and 3rd overall respectively.
The Senior 125/250 group followed next and it was a similar story to the AMX! Shaun Southgate had an unfortunate dnf in the first race, but proved to be unstoppable in the next two motos. Joe Bamfield’s confident riding on a track he knows well gave him 1st place in the first race, followed by a 3rd and a 2nd to give him the overall top spot. Consistently fast riding was the key for the overall 2nd and 3rd spots, with Mason Law and George Redhead taking those.
Next came the Big Wheels and this was a battle of two riders. Connor Clark and Michael Eccles dominated the class and coming into the final moto were tied on points with one win and one second apiece. In the end, Connor was triumphant with Michael taking a very well deserved second place overall. Jack Gardiner took third spot with a third and 2 fourths.
Connor Hughes made his presence felt in the Small Wheels with the overall win as a result of 2 seconds and a win. Callum Heasman and Jack Camwell were in top form to take a win apiece to take second and third places. This group was fantastic to watch with the leader changing so often – it could have been anyone’s victory! Well done to all the riders.
The Junior 65’s didn’t disappoint either. It was a one horse race this time though, with a hat-trick of wins going to Christopher Mills. He led all the races with great style and got a well deserved top spot on the podium. The riders behind jostled for position throughout the 3 races, making it a very interesting group to watch. Jack Scott and Max Broadbelt went into the last race on equal points so they both had everything to ride for! In the end, Jack came in second behind Chris and Max got third – congratulations to you all!
The Autos had a large line up as well and this is heartening to see in these difficult times. This was another class dominated by one rider; Cambridge’s William Egglestone was unstoppable and took all three wins by miles. He certainly showed how an auto could be ridden! Jay Hellis rode his socks off to take second place in all three races but couldn’t catch William, no matter how hard he tried. Only 4 points separated the next 4 riders; Buster Heart, Louis Dutton, Ike Carter and Billy Carter all rode so well and anyone could have taken 3rd spot. But in the end Buster got that all important extra point and secured his place on the podium.
A very successful day for all riders and an enjoyable day for everyone. Thanks go to the medics for their help and to Cliff for supplying the track, marshals and great track preparation. A HUGE thank you to all the club committees who helped out – especially Kevin, Jayne, Karin, Carmine and Martin. A great day’s team work! Make sure you book in early for the next round on November 28th!
