During the start of the 8 Hours of Duha competition Vincent Philippe of SERT clenched the holeshot for his team.On Sunday the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team (SERT) clenched the 2010 World Endurance Championship with a final victory in Qatar. The team, made up of Sylvain Guintoli, Vincent Philippe and Freddy Foray, led during the start of the 8 Hours of Doha event and ended with a four-lap advantage over the Yamaha Austria Racing Team. Meanwhile, the RMT #21 Racing Team rounded out the podium in the last competition, finishing five laps adrift of the leaders.
Philippe of SERT nailed the holeshot in the beginning to give his team the advantage, but the BMP Elf 99 squad engaged the leaders shortly after. The two teams battled for much of the early competition, and by the halfway mark both teams had completed 116 laps. The Yamaha Austria Racing Team held down third heading into the second half, while the RMT #21 Racing Team ran 43 seconds adrift of YART in third-place.
In the final stretch of the contest, however, the BMW team lost significant time at the hands of Sebastien Gimbert when another rider crashed in front of him. Further disappointment for the BMP Elf 99 team came when fuel issues caused two riders to pass the team with the checkered flag in sight. Overall, the team finished sixth in the final race.
"It's been something of a rollercoaster season," said Bartholemy. "This season we've been almost untouchable in practice and qualifying, taking pole position three times in succession, but then our luck has deserted us in the races. We were particularly unlucky here in Qatar, with Sebastien forced to run off the track at high speed to avoid a fallen rider, otherwise we'd have been on the podium this weekend."
SERT went on to claim its 10th World Endurance title despite having no-scores at Le Mans and the 8 Hours of Suzuka event. After finishing fourth at Doha, the Kawasaki Bolliger Team of Switzerland lost their lead in the championship and had to settle for the runner-up position.
